With AI, developers can automate mundane tasks, generate code snippets, and even perform complex debugging with remarkable speed.

However, this influx of AI-related tools brings significant ethical considerations. As AI becomes an integral part of the development process, questions arise about the implications of its automation on critical thinking and cognitive engagement among developers.

Using electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activity, researchers discovered that students using LLMs—specifically OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4—exhibited the least brain activity. In contrast, the traditional group showed the strongest neural engagement, with higher levels of cognitive load. This diminished brain activity among LLM users translated into a striking lack of content retention; a staggering 83% of the AI-assisted group struggled to recall their essays just moments after completion.

What does this mean for developers? Heavy reliance on AI tools can dull critical thinking skills over time. While a singular instance of AI assistance might be harmless, consistent usage risks atrophy of these essential cognitive faculties.

The Importance of Developer Education in the Age of AI

As AI adoption accelerates—Stanford University’s 2025 AI Index Report noted a jump from 55% to 78% of organizations integrating AI—it’s crucial for developers to sharpen their skillsets. The same report indicated a worrying trend: AI-related cybersecurity incidents are on the rise, with a staggering increase of 56% in the last year.
