Mumbai Police Oppose Bail Plea of Shariful Islam Shehzad in Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Case

In a high-profile case that has captured the attention of the nation, the Mumbai police have firmly opposed the bail plea of Shariful Islam Shehzad, who is accused of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The police’s written response highlights their concerns regarding Shehzad’s potential flight risk to Bangladesh, given that he is a Bangladeshi national who allegedly entered India illegally.

Concerns Over Flight Risk and Witness Tampering

The police articulated their fears that if Shehzad were released on bail, he might attempt to flee the country or influence the complainant and witnesses involved in the case. They stated, “If the applicant accused is released on bail, there is a possibility that he may lure or influence the complainant and witnesses through enticement or other means.” This assertion underscores the gravity of the situation, as the police believe that Shehzad poses a significant risk not only of absconding but also of obstructing justice.

Shehzad’s Defense and Claims of False Accusation

In his bail plea, Shehzad, represented by advocate Ajay Gawali, contended that the First Information Report (FIR) against him is “patently false” and that he has cooperated fully with the investigation. He argued that further detention would serve no useful purpose, suggesting that the evidence against him is insufficient to warrant continued custody. However, the police have countered this claim by asserting that the evidence collected thus far is robust and compelling.

Strong Evidence Against the Accused

The police have emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the strength of the evidence they have gathered. They indicated that a chargesheet would soon be filed against Shehzad, reinforcing their position that he should remain in custody. Among the evidence cited are forensic findings linking Shehzad to the crime. Notably, a knife fragment retrieved from Khan’s spine during surgery matched pieces found at the crime scene and another part recovered from Shehzad, as confirmed by a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina.

CCTV Footage and Forensic Analysis

Further bolstering the police’s case is CCTV footage that captures Shehzad committing the crime and fleeing the scene. Facial recognition analysis conducted at the forensic lab confirmed his identity. Additionally, Shehzad reportedly led investigators to the locations where he procured the weapons used in the attack, and a panchnama was conducted at these sites. The police have also collected additional evidence, including Call Details Records (CDR), Subscriber Details Records (SDR), and tower location data from Shehzad’s mobile phone.

Evidence of Bangladeshi Citizenship

The mobile phone seized during Shehzad’s arrest has revealed evidence of his Bangladeshi citizenship, and a detailed forensic analysis of the device is currently underway. In a further effort to substantiate their case, the police have sent blood-soaked clothing belonging to Khan and his injured staff for chemical analysis, with the reports now submitted as evidence.

The Incident: A Shocking Attack

The attack on Saif Ali Khan occurred on January 16, when an intruder entered his 12th-floor flat in Bandra and repeatedly stabbed him. The actor, aged 54, underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital to remove a knife fragment lodged near his spine and was discharged five days later. Shehzad was apprehended two days following the attack, marking a swift response from law enforcement.

Upcoming Court Hearing

The court is scheduled to hear the matter on April 9, as the legal proceedings surrounding this shocking incident continue to unfold. The case not only raises questions about celebrity safety but also highlights broader issues regarding illegal immigration and the potential for violence.

As the investigation progresses, the Mumbai police remain vigilant, determined to ensure that justice is served in this alarming case that has left many in shock. The outcome of the upcoming court hearing will be closely watched, as it may set important precedents in handling similar cases in the future.
